Vintage Beefcake

Popular male nude images from the 1930s to the 1960s mimicked their female "pin-up" and "cheesecake" counterparts. Yet the male nude market was shrouded in far more secrecy and subterfuge. When the images were sold, they were distributed as health guides, artist's references, or bodybuilding souvenir. Because of the postal laws, even the finest photographers faced imprisonment for producing frontal nudes. Yet the images featured in the "Beefcake" galleries at left are often exquisite, classically posed, and expertly processed works of art.
